Good MorningEquities traders shrugged off another hot inflation report in favor of the earnings outlook. The Consumer Price Index was released Wednesday morning and shows the pace of inflation advanced 0.5% over the past month, exactly as expected. The Dark Cloud hanging over the market is the fact year-over-year inflation remains high and steady at 5.4% and points to continued pressure on consumer spending. The S&P 500 was able to advance another 0.25% in a quiet day of training and set a new all-time high.
The market is not out of the woods, however. The Producer Price index is due out this week as well and will add another shade to the inflation picture. If producer prices continue to rise at a steady pace they will lead to higher consumer prices down the road. If the S&P 500 cannot keep up with the pace of inflation it will cut into the pace of earnings growth and weigh heavily on index prices later in the year.
