Good MorningEquity markets retreated on Thursday ahead of today's NFP report. The report is expected to show resilience in the labor market, with jobs increasing by 150,000 and unemployment holding steady at 4.2%. The risk is that solid albeit cooler-than-earlier-in-the-year data will dampen the Fed's appetite for rate cuts, which have been robustly forecasted. The expectation ahead of the report is for another 50 basis points by the end of the year and 100 basis points or more by the end of next. A slower pace isn't bad but will impact the outlook for earnings and raise the risk of a recession.
The Q3 earnings reporting cycle begins next week, providing another reason to expect increased volatility. The season starts on Friday with reports from several major banks, including JPMorgan Chase & Company. JPMorgan has already warned its interest income will fall short and may provide a disappointing report. However, the critical data will concern the retail banking segments, consumer health, and credit loss provisions. Featured: Wall Street’s quietly buying these 3 AI infrastructure plays (Ad)
