Good MorningA broad, cyclical upswing looks to be taking shape as tax relief, improving profitability, resilient economic conditions, and still-reasonable valuations support a rally that is widening beyond mega-caps. The more powerful setup is the potential for positive feedback loops, where steady labor markets support confident consumers and spending, and that strength feeds back into growth and earnings.
On the macro side, the Atlanta Fed’s GDPNow points to Q4 GDP accelerating to above 5.25%, while weekly jobless claims have trended near long-term lows. Inflation leaned constructive, with headline CPI at 2.7% and core CPI at 2.6%, versus expectations for a firmer print. Rate-cut odds remain muted near term, with CME data implying a 5% chance of a January cut, about 65% of a cut by June, and roughly 70% of two cuts by year-end.
Earnings remain the key catalyst, and the outlook has strengthened, with consensus tracking roughly 15% growth and acceleration expected into the back half of the year. The small-cap setup is notable too, with Russell 2000 earnings forecasts averaging 15% to 20% and some estimates running higher, alongside a longer-term upside target near 3,650. This week’s watchlist includes 3M on Tuesday, Johnson & Johnson and Halliburton on Wednesday morning, Abbott on Thursday, and Intuitive Surgical on Thursday after the close.
